Deptford Twp. – Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) student enrollment numbers substantially increased for the fall 2016 semester up 4.1 percent, defying the downward trend overwhelmingly afflicting the majority of New Jersey's community colleges.

Full-time enrollment at RCGC is up 4.9 percent, with the number of part-time students increasing by 3.1 percent. The number of credit hours taken by students this semester also grew by 4.2 percent. This surge in student attendance is heartening to college officials who have recently initiated new tuition-saving options with premier partner Rowan University as a way to reduce the cost of a bachelor's degree. Last year, fall enrollment at the College was down 4.1 percent.

"Because of our unique premier partnership with Rowan University, Rowan College at Gloucester County is able to provide students with more educational choices," stated College President Frederick Keating. "Two of the exclusive programs —Rowan Choice and the 3+1 program— offer access to a Rowan University four-year degree with generous savings. For the student interested in transferring to a different four-year university or college, completing the first two years at RCGC costs less than $5,000 in tuition and fees a year — a huge savings."

Rowan Choice, now in its second year, has grown from 150 to 250 students. The one-of-a-kind partnership between RCGC and Rowan University offers students an affordable residential college experience at a discounted cost. Rowan Choice enables RCGC freshmen to choose a one or two-year option to live on Rowan University's main campus in Glassboro while saving as much as $8,500 on tuition. Room and board are charged at the University price, while tuition and fees are assessed at the community college rate.

The latest debt-reducing opportunity making headlines this summer was the Rowan University/RCGC announcement of 3+1. A first in New Jersey, the 3+1 program allows students to earn a bachelor's degree for less than $30,000 by completing three years of coursework at RCGC and one year at Rowan. Students pay tuition and fees for three years at the community college price, then take the senior year at Rowan University. RCGC's 3+1 program, which includes five degree options —Law and Justice Studies, Liberal Studies, Nursing, Psychology and Radio, Television and Film— became available to students this fall.

While other community colleges across the state continue to see a steady decline in enrollment numbers, RCGC's popularity is on the rise. Committed to "thinking outside of the box," RCGC searches for innovative alternatives that will help to make a college education affordable for students and parents.
