Deptford Twp. – The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Club at
Rowan College at Gloucester County made a special delivery on Tuesday, March 8, to children recovering from heart surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
Members of the College’s DMS Club volunteered their time and sewing skills to cut, stuff, stitch, wash and package an assortment of fabrics handcrafted into heart-shaped “hug” pillows. DMS Club President Jennifer Fontanez coordinated the community service project, which provided more than 100 pillows in a variety of fun themes including super heroes, animals, and popular movie and cartoon characters, to comfort the pediatric heart patients. When hugged, the pillows help to reduce the pain experienced following surgery during coughing and deep breathing.
The College’s DMS students complete clinical education hours at CHOP’s ultrasound department and the hospital staffs several graduates of the program.
Rowan College at Gloucester County is located on a 250-acre campus on Tanyard Road, Deptford, just off Exit 56 of Route 55.
