Rowan College at Gloucester County’s (RCGC) newest scholarship will provide a leg up to Health & Physical Education and Exercise Science majors with an interest in the field of nutrition. The Lauren Morgan Scholarship Endowment was made possible by a generous donation from Richard H. Holmes Jr. and Judith A. Holmes in honor of the retirement of RCGC assistant professor and women’s tennis coach Lauren Morgan.

“After my own retirement, I started taking classes at RCGC,” said Richard Holmes during the endowment signing. “I took 19 classes in total — and all of those were with Lauren. I was so impressed with her dedication to her students that I encouraged both my wife and our son to take a class. Lauren has influenced every member of our family for the better. Judith and I can think of no more fitting way to show our appreciation of her than with this endowment.”

This May will mark Morgan’s last semester at RCGC after 20 years teaching in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Division. In addition to coaching numerous RCGC tennis teams to both Region XIX and National Championships over the past two decades, she has also taught courses in nutrition, health and wellness, cardiovascular fitness, swimming and tennis. Her passion for teaching and ability to push her students towards achieving their full potential was what made an impact on the Holmes family.

“My husband talked me into taking a swimming class with Lauren,” remarked Judith Holmes. “I don’t think I made it past six laps on my first day. I can remember her smiling and telling me that by the end of the class, I would swim 100 laps without stopping. I had my doubts, but Lauren did not. By the end of that class, I swam 100 laps — twice! The confidence she has in her students and their abilities was an inspiration to me.”

The endowment, signed into place at a ceremony held on Thursday, May 5, was Morgan’s official last day as an instructor and coach at RCGC. The Lauren Morgan Scholarship Endowment is the first of its kind made available to Health & Physical Education and Exercise Science majors with a noted interest in the field of nutrition. It will provide a qualifying Gloucester County student with a minimum scholarship of $1,000 annually to be used towards tuition, books and fees.

“I have come across so many students in this field over the past 20 years who struggle financially,” said Morgan. “It means so much to have this opportunity extended to them in my name. I am so proud and grateful that Rich and Judy are doing this. It is something I will truly never forget.”

Through the generosity of individuals, organizations and companies in the area, the Rowan College Foundation at Gloucester County offers numerous academic and program scholarships annually to qualified students enrolled on a full- or part-time basis.
