Education and style are hitting the red carpet on Thursday, April 27, when Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) teams up with Brooks Brothers to showcase nine college students academically and fashionably ready to take on the career world.
Spearheaded by RCGC's American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC), this unique fashion show features the stylish clothing and accessories of Brooks Brothers, in addition to students receiving fashion advice and business etiquette tips from the company's experienced salespeople. What makes this collaboration even more extraordinary is a commitment from local businesses to help students feel more confident as they go forth into the working world. Corporate sponsors, such as Bellia, the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce, Kennedy Health, Inspira Health Network, PCH Technologies and Republic Bank have each volunteered to "suit" a student, dressing them for future success. The Gloucester Premium Outlets and South Jersey Biz are also providing support.
"Every day as educators we ask ourselves how we can make our students better prepared for the workforce," stated Dr. Patricia Claghorn, dean of Business Studies and AAWCC chapter president. "The College provides the academic component of a good education. This new and exciting initiative will feature our students and their experiences while providing career readiness skills that will help set them apart."
The career readiness fashion event highlights the attributes and goals of RCGC students who are members of the AAWCC, DECA— an international association that prepares leaders and entrepreneurs for careers and education in marketing, finance, hospitality, management and other business areas— and the College's Cooperative Education Program. Students were required to submit an application to become one of the nine lucky participants to receive a suit, dress or outfit, including accessories and a makeover.
The "Suit A Student" Fashion Show on April 27 begins at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. A "meet and mingle" reception will be held in the College Center following the event to introduce guests to the evening's fashionable RCGC stars and generous show sponsors.
Tickets are $25 for general admission and are available in the Student Services Building, room 1155, Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 4 p.m. or order online at RCGC.edu/SuitAStudent. Students can purchase discounted tickets for $5 (with ID) in the College Center, Student Life Office, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds from the event fund the College's AAWCC scholarship endowment.
