Deptford Twp. – The Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) & Community Chorus seek to spread peace, love and holiday cheer to area residents during its annual holiday concert on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Pitman.
The chorus will sing Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale cantata
Watchet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, conducted by Lawrence De Pasquale and accompanied by David Anderson, with solo performances by soprano Rebecca Clement-Riether and baritone Wesley Parrott. The orchestra, conducted by George Atanasiu, will accompany the choir.
One of Bach's most notable works, the cantata is based on a 1599 Lutheran hymn centered on the parable of the ten virgins found in the gospel of Matthew. Composed in 1731 when Bach was employed by the Lutheran church, the composition focuses on a night watchman riding his horse along the countryside crying out to awaken the community that the Messiah is coming, a comparison to the groom coming for his bride. Additional Hanukkah and Christmas music will be performed at the event.
There is a suggested goodwill offering of $5 per person to support the John V. Chard Memorial Scholarship Fund and chorus expenses. The choral scholarship is awarded annually to selected applicants who are pursuing studies in higher education either at RCGC or other local schools.
The First Presbyterian church is located at 10 Wildwood Ave. in Pitman.
