Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) Dean of Business Studies Patricia Claghorn was named executive vice chairperson of the American Red Cross South Jersey Chapter on June 26.

Claghorn first became involved with the American Red Cross after meeting former Executive Director of the South Jersey Chapter and Gloucester County College alum Laura Steinmetz five years ago. Steinmetz suggested the idea of serving on the board to Claghorn during a fundraising event.

In this position, Claghorn will support Chairperson Linda DuBois in leading the efforts of the Red Cross within the community. As a member of the board, Claghorn also helps to structure activities and fundraisers for organizations. For example, during Hurricane Sandy she helped at the West Deptford Shelter by setting up cots.

"Having the opportunity to help people less fortunate makes you realize how fortunate you are," said Claghorn.

As Dean of Business Studies, Claghorn's involvement with the Red Cross helps the nonprofit hire RCGC interns. Claghorn stresses that students should make service a part of their lives, especially those looking for work experience. She highly recommends volunteering at nonprofit agencies like the Red Cross since it provides students with the opportunity to improve their skills and resume while helping the community. Claghorn believes that it is vital for everyone to participate in some type of volunteer work.

"The way to a happier life is helping other people," said Claghorn. "If you can focus on helping others, instead of yourself, you will be a happier person."

Through the power of volunteers and generosity of donors, the American Red Cross has been able to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies for more than 130 years. The nonprofit has nearly 500 chapters and focuses on disaster response, health and safety, service to the armed forces, international relief and blood collection.

The American Red Cross South Jersey Chapter has been serving nearly 360,000 people in the communities of Gloucester and Salem Counties since 1917. For more information about volunteering with the South Jersey Chapter, call 856-256-8300 or visit www.redcross.org/nj/sewell.
