Twenty-eight years ago, Christopher Rizzo—a 22-year old Gloucester County College (now Rowan College at Gloucester County) student—passed away. To honor his memory, his mother and grandmother created a scholarship earmarked for the purchase of textbooks, providing financial assistance over the years to numerous college students. On Feb. 8, that love and generosity was once again renewed, transforming the book scholarship into a permanent endowment.
When Martha Rizzo died this past December, her daughter, Alyce Taylor, respected her wishes to establish a lasting scholarship in her grandson's memory. The Christopher Rizzo Memorial Scholarship will provide a perpetual $500 gift annually to a qualified full-time, first-or second-year student that can be applied to tuition, books or educational fees. The scholarship is open to all majors with financial need who show satisfactory academic progress. All applicants must submit a 250-word essay on career objectives and there is no GPA requirement.
"Since the establishment of this scholarship in 1991, Christopher's mother and grandmother have given to honor his memory. This scholarship has aided more than 28 students since its inception," stated Rowan College Foundation and Alumni Relations Director Cody Miller. "We are extremely thankful that the family has endowed this fund to provide a perpetual scholarship. Christopher's memory will continue to live on and students at the college will continue to benefit from the family's generosity."
