AAWCC Gifts Endowment to RCGC Students

Date: 5/16/2016

Deptford Twp. – The Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) met with college faculty, staff and students on Tuesday, May 10 to finalize an agreement granting the college a $10,000 endowment to be used for student scholarships.

RCGC is home to the AAWCC’s first ever South Jersey chapter, founded in 2012. The organization welcomes faculty, students and staff of any gender to support their mission to change the lives of women, both as working professionals at the college and as residents in the community, by providing leadership, advocacy, mentorship and service. The AAWCC has sponsored numerous book scholarships over the years, but as Dr. Patricia Claghorn, chapter President and Dean of Business Studies, stated: “The time has come for our chapter to make a long term, permanent commitment, which underscores our goals of scholarship, service and mentorship.”

The endowment will provide a scholarship of at least $500 annually to an RCGC student who demonstrates a passion for advancing women in their professional lives and communities. The scholarship will be available to both full-time and part-time students of the college.

The mission of the AAWCC was best demonstrated when one of their student members, Kendra Nelson, took the podium to express what membership in the organization had done for her: “Not only has the AAWCC helped me figure out what my educational options were, but it’s introduced me to such an inspiring group of women. They’ve been a great example to me, and helped me figure out what I want to do when I leave RCGC.”

Through the generosity of individuals, organizations and companies in the area, Rowan College Foundation at Gloucester County offers numerous academic and program scholarships annually to qualified students enrolled on a full- or part-time basis.
