On to the NJCAA D-III College World Series!!!
Thanks to an all-star performance from sophomore third baseman Gia Morina (Paulsboro), the RCGC softball team captured their fifth NJCAA Division III Region XIX (District E) crown on Saturday with a sweep of Lehigh Carbon Community College in the title round.
Morina, who collected three hits and two RBIs in the clinching 8-2 victory, was selected as tournament Most Valuable Player.
In the clinching game, the Roadrunners moved out to a quick 4-1 lead by the bottom of the third inning and never looked back. Sophomore catcher Lynnsie Collins (Buena Regional) also stroked three hits with an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Amber Krecko (GCIT) was the winner of Game 2.
Freshman pitcher Mackenzie Laffery was the winner of Game 1. Lafferty went 6 1/3 strong innings, striking out five and allowing seven hits. She had relief help from Krecko.
Also in Game 1, Morina collected three RBIs in a three-run fourth inning while Collins also knocked in a pair of runs to lift RCGC.
The Runners fell behind 2-0 before rallying for three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead. The Cougars scored two in the seventh before Krecko came on in relief to record the final two outs.
The two wins gave the Roadrunners a sweep in the best of three Regional championship series.
Coach Steve DePasquale's team, No. 4 in the latest NJCAA National Rankings, improved to 22-15 overall.
"This team went through some difficult games, especially early in the season, but they never gave up and they deserve to be going to the National Championship Tournanment," said DePasquale.
