RCGC sophomore slugger Matt Woods was selected as NJCAA Region XIX Player of the Year this week while several of his Roadrunner teammates earned spots on the All-Region Teams.
Joining Woods, an outfielder, on the First Team were pitcher Sam Guckin and designated hitter Dom D'Alessandro. Named to the Second Team was outfielder Collin Fabio and selected to the Third Team was catcher Jack Goan. Pitcher Matt Parr was chosen for All Honorable Mention.
Woods, a former standout at Eastern High School, teammed with D'Alessandro to give the Roadrunners one of the most potent power combos in the nation. Woods led all Division III hitters nationally with 74 RBIs while D'Alessandro ranked third with 71 RBIs.
There was no limit to Woods' skills at the plate as he slammed 8 home runs, hit a sizzling .447 and even stole 12 bases. His solid play helped coach Rob Valli's Roadrunners post an impressive 42-12 overall record and a current No. 4 national ranking in NJCAA Division III.
"Last year I was surprised at my power numbers, and this year my goals were to improve my numbers and become a more well-rounded player," said Woods, who will play for St. John's University next season. "The coaches here really helped me develop my skills to give me the opportunity to move on to a Division I program like St. John's, and I appreciate all of their efforts."
