May 25-31, 2013 Tyler, TX

Gloucester County College Roadrunner Baseball once again returns to the NJCAA Division III World Series to represent NJCAA Region 19. The Roadrunners have been ranked #1 throughout the season accumulating 45 wins to just 3 losses. The team marched undefeated through the Region Tournament and seems to be peeking at the right time.

Roadrunners Win Championship Game 16-4

May 29, 2013 Tyler, TX

Gloucester County College Baseball used an 18 hit performance to defeat Century College 16-4 for the NJCAA Division III National Championship. For the Roadrunners, this is their 7th NJCAA Division III Baseball National Championship and 25th overall National Championship for the College. This has been an amazing year for GCC that includes now five NJCAA National Championship Teams.

GCC got off to a great start as Roadrunner freshman Narcisso Crook hit a 3-run HR in the top of the first inning. This was the second game of the Series that Crook hit a 3-run HR in the top of the 1st. The freshman phenom finished the game with 7 RBI's, 3 hits, 2 runs scored and a walk. He had a terrific World Series batting .588 with 2 HR's, 13 RBI's, and 10 hits, all tournament bests. Crook was named MVP of the World Series. Century College, the #2 ranked team in the nation heading into the World Series, battled back to tie the game 3-3 heading into the fourth inning.

The Roadrunners put the game away in the top of the fourth. GCC bat through their order, collected 10 runs, and built a 13-3 lead. All of the Roadrunner lineup contributed to the win. Alex DeBellis, the Region 19 Tournament MVP, collected three doubles in the game, Bryan Perlmutter went 3-6 with 2 RBI's, Tom Kain went 2-5 and scored 3 times adding to his tournament leading 10 runs scored.

The Roadrunners run support was plenty for starting pitcher Andrew Furber. Furber gave up three earned runs in six full innings while collecting 8 strikeouts. Mike Cogliano pitched the seventh and eigth innings and allowed one run and Kevin Walsh came in for the ninth and shut down Century with a one, two, three inning with a strikeout to end the game.

The Roadrunners finish the season as Conference champions, Region champions, National Champions and with a 49-3 record.

Roadrunners Headed to Championship Game

May 27, 2013 Tyler, TX

The GCC Roadrunner Baseball Team was led by its outstanding pitching staff all season but this week at the NJCAA Division III World Series their bats have also come alive. The Roadrunners got another outstanding start on the mound on Wednesday night in the Semifinal matchup against Waubonsee CC from freshman standout Mike Sullivan but the bats stole the show as GCC scored a 13-0 win in just five innings. The Roadrunners now will get a day off as all of the one-loss teams remaining will play on Tuesday for the right to face Gloucester Wednesday in Championship Game 1.

The Roadrunners got off to a great start putting four runs up in the top of the first inning. Matt Ackerman started the game with a double to right field. Bryan Perlmutter followed with a single but Ackerman was put out at third base. Tom Kain followed with a double that scored Perlmutter. Brett Phillips got the first of his three hits to score Kain and the pressure being applied by the Roadrunners proved to be too much for Waubonsee. The Chiefs finished the game with five errors and the Roadrunners were there to capitalize on each of them with aggressive base running that has come to be their hallmark at this World Series.

A look at the boxscore shows that all the members of the starting lineup contributed in a meaningful way. A trio of sophomores led the way as Phillips had three hits and three RBI's, Kain finished with two doubles and Eric Frain had two hits and two RBI's. Each of these three was on the team last season that fell in their opening game at the World Series and could not recover. Each has played a major role in leading this team to the Championship Round and the memories from last season are certainly driving them. Matt Ackerman and Alex DeBellis had two hits apiece as well.

Mike Sullivan has a good chance to finish this season undefeated. The freshman is now 9-0 and put together a shutdown performance tonight in Tyler. His fastball was too much for the Chiefs and he was clearly pumped up on the mound. Sullivan finished with six K's while allowing just three hits and a lone walk. Behind the plate Alex DeBellis had another fine game. The sophomore transfer has been a key to the success of the Roadrunner pitching staff all season and probably deserves more praise along with Roadrunner Pitching Coach Josh Schwartz.

This has been a great three days of baseball for the Roadrunners in Tyler. Their rest day will give them the benefit of a lot of rested arms for the Championship Game and if the bats stay hot this could be a great ending to what has been one of the best seasons in Roadrunner history. The team is now 48-3.

Roadrunners Advance to NJCAA Division III World Series Semifinal

May 26, 2013 Tyler, TX

Gloucester County College Baseball has advanced to Monday's Semifinal Game at the NJCAA Division III World Series with an 8-5 win today over Niagara CCC. This was a tense game that saw the Roadrunners build a lead only to have Niagara keep clawing their way back into the game. With the win, GCC will now play Waubonsee CC with the winner receiving a berth into the Championship Round and a day off on Tuesday. The loser will play on Tuesday vs. either Nassau, Niagara, Brookhaven, or Century with a chance to get back into the Championship Round in this double elimination tournament.

The Roadrunners got off to a big start today versus Niagara. In the top of the first inning, freshman standout Narcisso Crook hit a massive three run HR over the left field fence at Mike Carter Field in Tyler, TX. Crook has been the hottest hitter in the tournament so far. He finished the day today 3-4 with four RBI's, a walk, and two runs scored. In yesterday's win over Century College he had two RBI's and collected three more hits including a triple. Crook now has 13 HR's this season and 64 RBI's. His second hit of the day today scored Tom Kain and gave the Roadrunners a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Niagara came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Soph Bill Mendek was on the mound for the Roadrunners. GCC answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth. George Monsen who had four hits today got on base with a single and then advanced to third and was scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Ackerman. Bryan Perlmutter then hit a double that scored Dan O'Neill who was on base after a walk. Tom Kain's single then scored Perlmutter and gave GCC a 7-2 lead. The Roadrunners final run was scored in the top of the fifth inning as Crook led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Brett Phillips, and then scored on a perfectly laid down sacrifice bunt by sophomore Eric Frain. Frain has been an unsung hero for this team all season, playing great defense at multiple positions, stealing bases to get into scoring position, and unselfish at the plate.

The Roadrunners got another strong start from the pitching staff. Bill Mendek went 7 1/3 innings allowing 7 hits, 4 walks, and four runs. Mendek would be the #1 starter on most teams at this level and will be expected to step right into the starting rotation next season at NCAA DII Lynn University and he showed why today. Battling through a tough Niagara lineup he worked out of jams and limited any possible big innings. His pickoff of Niagara's Nick Kellner in the bottom of the fifth inning was a thing of beauty. A pair of sophomores came on in relief to close out the game. Mike Cogliano came on in the eighth, allowed one hit, then struck out the innings final two batters. Kevin Walsh then came in for the ninth and closed out the game with three straight outs.

Roadrunners Off to Fast Start at JUCO World Series

May 25, 2013 Tyler, TX

Gloucester CC has defeated Century College (MN) 9-0 today at the NJCAA Division III World Series in Tyler, TX. The Roadrunners came into the series #1 in the national poll and Century was #2. Due to the rotation of the draw for different regions of the country the two teams met in the first round of the 8 team double elimination tournament. The Roadrunners improved to 46-3 so far this season with the win.

Soph pitcher Jeff Singer (Holy Cross HS), who is committed to Monmouth University next season, pitched a complete game shutout. Due to speed up rules being in effect for the tournament the game lasted just 6 ½ innings. Singer struck out 9 batters and allowed only one hit and three walks in a dominant performance. His career at GCC has been astonishing as he set the career win mark with his victory today and we hope he will add to that mark later this week. The record was held by GCC Hall of Famer John Broome who was the staff leader for two GCC National Championship Teams. Singer was an All-American as a freshman, the Region 19 Player of the Year this season, and a likely All-American once again when the voting takes place this week in Tyler.

The Roadrunners did their damage with two big innings. In the bottom of the fourth Tom Kain and Alex DeBellis led the inning off with singles. Freshman Narcisso Crook followed with a two RBI triple to open the scoring. GCC added two more runs on RBI's by Brett Phillips and Dan O'Neill. The Roadrunners then added their final five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Crook ended the game 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI's, Phillips scored two runs and had 2 RBI's, and Alex DeBellis, Eric Frain and Dan O'Neill each had two hits.
