The Roadrunners used winning championship performances in the morning singles matches by Vladislav Koldomasov #4 singles and then Donovan Vassalotti #3 singles to clinch the victory. Teh #3 doubles tandem of Jon Sjonlander and Aaron Williams later secured another individual championship for GCC. Gloucester finished with a team high 34 points and was closely followed by CC Rhode Island (29.5) and Nassau CC (29).

Coming into the final day of competition GCC knew they needed to win a earn a few more points in oder to put the title out of reach for CCRI and Nassau. The Roadrunners had seven matches in the main draw on the final day of competition worth 1 team point each and two matches in the backdraw finals worth .5 team points each.

At #1 singles AJ Moore took a tough 6-2, 6-3 loss to Dykhyun Park from Montogomery-Rockville in the first match complete. Then Koldomasov scored his victory in 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Ross Bouchard from CCRI. On the far courts Shamell Martin won a #6 singles backdraw final match over Nassau CC and Andrew Pfieffer won a #2 singles backdraw final match over SUNY-Adirondak. That set the stage for the clinching victory by freshman Donovan Vassalotti who defeated Oxford College's Zac Hersman 7-6(4), 7-5 in a thrilling match that sealed the championship for GCC. Dan Hays played a great match at #5 singles by fell to Nassau CC's Kevin Burgess 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the #5 singles final.

Despite having wrapped up the title there were still three doubles matches to be played in the afternoon for individual championships. The Roadrunners had reached the championship finals in all the doubles flights, a credit to GCC Assistant Coaches Scott Henderson and Ron Battle who have worked extensively on the GCC doubles teams. This was the first time GCC had reached the finals in all of the doubles flights and a major accomplishment. At #1 doubles it was CCRI who was the fresher team though and defeated GCC's Moore and Vassalotti 6-1, 6-0. At #2 doubles GCC's Pfeiffer and Koldomasov fell to Nassau CC 7-6(5), 6-1. It was the #3 doubles team of freshman Jon Sjolander and Aaron Williams that came through with the 6-2, 6-3 win over CCRI that was the signature doubles match for GCC and ended the afternoon on a high note.

All in all GCC comes home with the Team Championship, the Max Grubbs Coach of the Year Award (Brian Rowan), 3 Individual Championships (Koldomasov #4 Singles, Vassalotti #3 Singles, Sjolander/Williams #3 Doubles), and 10 All-Americans (Moore #1 Singles, Vassalotti #3 Singles, Koldomasov #4 Singles, Hays #5 Singles, Moore #1 Doubles, Vassalotti #1 Doubles, Pfieffer #2 Doubles, Koldomasov #2 Doubles, Sjolander #3 Doubles, Williams #3 Doubles). Roadrunners Take Lead at Nationals

May 16, 2012 Plano, TX

The Roadrunners are making it a habit of having big days on Semifinal Wednesday in Plano, TX. For the second year in a row GCC went undefeated in their semifinal matches, this year winning seven for seven and moving into first place in the NJCAA Men's Tennis Division III National Championship Tournament. The Roadrunners, with 30 total team points, are followed closely by CC Rhode Island (27) and Nassau CC (27 points) in what has been a very competitive tournament.

The day started well for GCC as team leader AJ Moore briskly defeated his opponent, Ari Smith, 6-2, 6-1 at #1 singles. Freshman Donovan Vassalotti followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #3 singles and then #5 singles Dan Hays won his match also. The final singles match of the day held the most drama as it was the only head-to-head singles matchup between then tournament leader Nassau and GCC. Roadrunner team captain Vladislav Koldomasov struggled with nerves and adjusting to the left hand serve of Nassau's Ken Pinilos and dropped the first set 1-6. After trailing early in the second Koldomasov earned a break of serve and closed out a 6-4 set. However, he found himself in a 3-5 hole in the third set and down 0-30 before he completed one of the most dramatic comebacks in GCC Tennis history storming to a 7-5 win in the third. The team swarmed Koldomasov after the match in the morning highlight.

The afternoon tone was also set by Moore and Vassalotti as both have played very clean tennis and put on a clinic in their 6-1, 6-0 win a #1 doubles. Sophomores Andrew Pfieffer and Koldomasov then teamed for a solid 6-4, 6-4 win over CC Rhode Island at #2 doubles. All attention then again turned to another GCC vs. Nassau CC matchup at #3 doubles. This time it was the team of Aaron Williams and Jon Sjolander who dropped a close first set in a tiebreaker and then battled back to win the next two 7-5 and 6-2 playing high quality tennis. Both teams created a tense atmosphere as each point seemed it could sway the match and the matches tomorrow look like they will be closely contested as well.

Unlike last season the Roadrunners will need to win several matches tomorrow in order to clinch the title. All singles championship matches will begin at 8am at Collin College. The doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 10:30am.See More
