Step 1: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Rowan College School Code: 006901
Before filing the FAFSA online, students (and their parents if they are dependents) should visit
www.pin.ed.gov and apply for a personal identification number (PIN). Having a PIN allows students and their parents to sign the FAFSA electronically and complete the entire process online.
The federal government strongly encourages students and parents to select the
IRS data retrieval option when completing the FAFSA. Doing so will:
For additional help, students can view a video tutorial on completing the FAFSA.
Step 2: Review the Student Aid Report (SAR)
After filing the FAFSA, students will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the U.S. Department of Education summarizing all the information provided on the application. Applicants should review the SAR for accuracy.
The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be included in the SAR. The EFC is used to determine a student's eligibility for federal student aid. This number results from financial information the student provided on his or her FAFSA.
The EFC is subtracted from a student's cost of attendance (COA) to determine his or her eligibility for need-based aid.
Necessary corrections can be made online at
If students do not receive the SAR or have questions regarding the SAR, they should contact the U.S. Department of Education.
Step 3: Submit Requested Documents to Financial Aid
Students should check their accounts on the
Rowan College Portal to ensure the College received the FAFSA. Some documents may have a Required status (R). Those documents must be completed and returned to the Office of Financial Aid.
Once the Office of Financial Aid receives the documents, they will be in a status of Pending Review (N) on the Requirements page of the portal. All documents are reviewed within 30 days; however, because many are processed much sooner, students should check the status of their documents often. If additional information is needed after the documents have been reviewed, those documents will be listed on the Requirements page. When all documents have been updated to a Reviewed status (S), the financial aid award can be viewed.
The Office of Financial Aid does not make tentative awards. No federal or state financial aid (including grants and loans) will be awarded until all of the required documents have been reviewed.
Step 4: Review and Monitor Financial Aid Status
Once the financial aid award is complete and students have registered for classes, the College will process the financial aid. Financial aid recipients with grants, loans and/or scholarships can view their awards on the Rowan College Portal, under Financial Aid Awards.
If all documents have been reviewed and a financial aid award cannot be seen, the student is not eligible for grants. However, students may be eligible for student loans and scholarships. Rowan College does not automatically award students a loan. If they would like to borrow a loan, they can request one. Students can learn more about student loans and how to request one on the Rowan College Loans page. Information about scholarships at Rowan College can be found on the Scholarships page.
Students should monitor their financial aid status from time to time before the start of each semester because the financial aid status is subject to change if enrollment status changes.
