FY14 New Jersey State Council on the Arts: Local Arts Program – $43,301 in Re-grantee Funds
Funding is requested for a musical performed by children "Disney's Mulan Junior" based on the Disney's 1998 film "Mulan" and the story Fa Mulan by Robert D. San Souci. "Disney's Mulan Junior" is a heartwarming celebration of culture, honor and a fighting spirit. Roughly 25 to 30 children are anticipated to be cast in numerous roles, many solo.
West Deptford Free Public Library
How do the arts and sciences go together? Can they go together? This SAP: "Art Meets Science … Spark a Reaction …Fizz, Boom, WOW" will be a series of performances throughout the year by artists who will coordinate with theme-related gallery and display cases exhibits; adult/senior, teen and children and family programs; along with library resources and collection materials. The audience will have the opportunity to experience different genres in the performing arts while incorporating a science theme.
Glassboro Economic Development
GEDC would like to apply for funds to build the annual traditional Italian Festival in their downtown with the St. Anthony's Mutual Aid Society. These funds will pay for the "Verdi Band of Norristown" and traditional Italian musicians, such as accordion players and Italian crooners.
Rowan College at Gloucester County Community Chorus
Through a collaboration with the Rowan University String Ensemble and the Gloucester County Children's Choir, the Rowan College at Gloucester County Community Chorus requests funds for the interpretation and presentation of Hendel's oratorio, "Messiah," at the United Methodist Church in Pitman on December 7, 2014.
Woodbury Public Library
Funding will support the continuation of the monthly after school art and literature program for children ages six to 12 sponsored by the library and the Friends of the Library. This program will begin in January and will be presented the first Wednesday of every month, highlighting a theme for each month. The goal is to expose children in the community to various art mediums and cultural traditions.
City of Woodbury – Art in the Streets
Funding will support the continuation of "Art in the Streets," a free outdoor summer art program. The program takes place in seven economically-disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the city and is set up for two to three consecutive days giving children ages seven to 12 the opportunity to explore their creativity and expression through creative take home projects each week.
Glassboro Child Development Center
Funding will be used to expand the preschool and school-age programs for hands on GIRLS and Mom and Daughter classes utilizing the skills of artists as teachers through programs in clay, sculpture, dance and mosaic to enhance the study of the sciences, technology, engineering and math.
Music at Bunker Hill
To fund a series of affordable classical music concerts for the general public using professional soloists, a string quartet, and a woodwind quintet.
Feast of the Assumption Committee: Newfield
This is a planning grant in order to organize an artistic committee who will seek artist proposals for a light installation on the grounds of the Feast of the Assumption Church in Newfield for the county-wide festival in 2015.
West Deptford Little Theater
Funding requested for the "Summer Magic Program" where children younger than age 15 are instructed and rehearsed in live theater performance skills, especially the art of drama and music in this six-week program, which culminates with live performances.
Center for Family Services
This funding will expand homeless and underprivileged youths' access to artistic forms of expression through dance, music and creative writing projects. Through programs with a certified art therapist and local artists, youth will discover individual artistic abilities and creative outlets for self-expression that will promote self-esteem.
Gloucester County Children's Choir (GCCC)
The GCCC Operating Support funds will pay the choir's artistic staff. Staff members spend months preparing the choir for their annual spring and Winter Concerts. The choir is well known for its musical selections, which are culturally and musically diverse and feature works by classical composers, spiritual and gospel selections, good-humored comical selections and seasonally appropriate musical pieces.
The 2014 GOS grant funding will support Learning Stages executive director/head teaching artist's salary for programs such as: Daydreamers for seven to 15 year old students, the Class Act After School Program, and Play in a Day, a unique evening of one act plays providing acting and directing opportunities for young adults ages 16 and older.
Gloucester County Italian Heritage Commission
Support requested for the 11th annual Italian Heritage festival in October of 2014 on the grounds of Riverwinds Community Center. In the Italian tradition, the festival offers musical performances, folk dancing, food and craft vendors, and demonstrations along with children's puppet shows, storytelling and Venetian mask making.
The Road Company
The focus of this program will be to engage the African American populations with the South Jersey premier of the "Color Purple." Funding will be used to host a series of free community engagement events, such as book reading circles and film screening with the intention of building audiences for the show.
GC Parks & Recreation Department – Theater Program
Summer theater program for children ages eight to 12 and teen's ages 13 to 17 years for this 5-6 week program culminating with performances.
